Match Rules (NFA Rules apply)

Quote by Jon Arthur, Double & Current UK Champion, assistant editor Match Fishing Magazine.

"If anyone is in any doubt as to how Barston Lake is fishing at the moment, Our Garbolino Club Angler of the year Final was won with 70lb (28lb Carp, 42lb Skimmers) and 37lb 4oz was needed for a prize.  The first half of this match was float only, with the second any method and a massive percentage of peoples catches were taken on the pole.  That's cracking fishing in my book, especially as there was bright sunshine all day that could have potentially made sport difficult."

We have recently restocked the Matchpool following the outbreak of KHV last year, and took the decision to restock with F1 Carp which are excellent sport all ear round, especially during the winter as they feed well after the carp and even the silver fish have stopped feeding.  See the video of the fish going into the Matchpool below.

The Fish 'O' Mania winner from 27th June 2007 was Chris Downes (above right) who won the event with 78lbs and went on to compete in the £25,000 winner takes all final on 21st July at Hayfield Lakes in Doncaster.  Runner up in the Fish 'O' Mania qualifier was Tim Bull who weighed in 50lbs from the River bank on peg no 37.  Fishery Manager Nigel Harrhy (right) with a Double figure Carp caught during the match on his way to a section win.

NFA Match Report (28th June 2007)

Fishing his first ever Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifier, Christopher Downs won the 14th golden ticket to Doncaster at Barston Lakes yesterday.

With torrential rain the previous two weeks leading up to the qualifier, there was clearly an adverse effect on the fishing. Thankfully on the day, the bad weather managed to stay away, however the damage to the qualifier had already been done. The anglers found bites hard to come by and one of the sections was won by only 13lbs.

With all of this in mind the match was proving to be a tight contest and only a handful of anglers were managing to get ahead of the rest of the field. With only 8lbs separating the 3rd and 10th placed anglers the closeness of the match was obvious.

However, after a few hours worth of fishing the contenders became apparent with three anglers taking a step up from the rest and barring a catastrophe were odds on to be there or thereabouts at the end of the match.

It was Christopher Downs, who was fishing his first ever qualifier for Fish ‘O’ Mania who won the match comfortably in the end. Fishing from peg 130 on Barston Lake, he caught down the margins to his right on catmeat over corn giving him a final weight of 78lbs.

Chris, a Customer Care Officer who comes from Stretton near Burton on Trent struggled to catch in the first hour, however he slowly but surely started to get some big fish in with the biggest being a 15lbs carp. With only an hour to go Chris knew he had around 50lbs of fish and thought that if he could make up to the 80lbs mark he would be in with a good chance of winning. Luckily for Chris, he managed to catch a few smaller fish down the margins and then a good sized carp taking him 15 minutes to land, giving him his winning margin. Upon hearing that he had won, Chris commented;

“I am very delighted to win and can’t wait until the final. I have already got the holidays booked in so that I can spend a good week practising at Hayfield. Fingers crossed and hopefully I will get the right draw and fish it in the right way.”

Runner-up on the day was Tim Bull from Leamington Spa who ended with a fine bag of carp weighing 50lbs 4ozs. Fishing on the method feeder alternating maggots, corn and boilies on the hook, he was still over 20lbs behind eventual winner Chris.

In third place was the nearly man of this years competition, Kieron Rich who once again missed out on a winning ticket adding to his collection of runner up and third spot placings. The Manchester based angler took the best pole caught weight of the day fishing worm and caster to weigh in with 34lbs 12ozs.

Mick Bull (left) winner of the 2006 Barston Bowl & £1000 cash.

Mick's 87lb 6oz from peg 20 beat off 100 anglers and Mick also went on to win the Barston Christmas match with an excellent 68lb in the cold of December and take away another £1000.

Current match record - 163lbs 8oz, Craig O'Brien (right)

Caught on a peg on the right hand bank during Summer of 2006, Craig beat the old record by a long way after finding big carp at an underwater feature fishing the method.

Biggest Fish - The end of June 2005 saw Barstons first 30 coming to the net - a mirror nicknamed 'the scar' which weighed 30lb 6oz. Last out in October 2004 when it weighed 29lbs 6oz, it was taken from open water on a large pellet fished over a big bed of 4mm pellets.  Now estimated at over 33lbs we are awaiting a photo for inclusion on the website.

Thirteen year old Scott Travis (left) from Cubbington, near Leamington in Warwickshire took what is thought to be the Barstons biggest ever bream when he landed this superb 10lb 8oz specimen (left).

Fishing a 4lb line and Size 16 hook baited with a single bronze maggot, Scott was float fishing for whatever he could catch when the big slab took his bait. Scott said afterwards: "I'd caught a few roach and rudd but knew I'd hooked something big as soon as I struck. I haven't stopped talking about it since because it even beats my dad's personal best!"

Meanwhile, shortly afterwards 14-years-old David Haynes from Balsall Common (right) beat his personal best for the second time of the year when he landed a 22lb common from a peg near the clubhouse.

Having fished a 12-hour session and landed a personal best of 19lb he return with a friend two days later after baiting a swim with source boilies. Fishing to a gravel bar in torrential rain and gale force winds, David struck into what he knew was a decent fish - but had to land it on his own because at the same time his friend also had a run. David took the fish using a led clip with tubing and Size 10 ESP Raptor to a 10lb hook length. Not bad for a lad who has only been carp fishing for six months!
